During injection molding, the upper and lower templates are often deformed due to the pressure of the injection rubber, so a support is added to the appropriate position to reduce mold damage.

The following are the weight that the pallet can bear and the acceptable cavity area:

M=Stool distance (in);

B=The thickness of the pallet (in);

W=The weight that the pallet can bear (lbs);

Z=section coefficient (in 3 );

P=Maximum pressure of the pallet (7,000 lbs/in 2 );

S=The maximum stress that the pallet can bear (12,000 lbs/in 2 );

L=Length of pallet (in);

A=acceptable cavity area (in 2 );

Example: (If the mold base size is 11-7/8” x 15”)

1. Without supporting head (Figure 6.2A)

L = 15”, B=1.875”, M=8.500”, S=12,000 lbs/in 2,

P = 7.000 lbs/in 2

Z = B 2 L / 6 = 15 x 1.875 2/6 = 8.79 in 3

W = 4ZS / M = 4 x 8.79 x 12.000 / 8.500 = 49,637 lbs

A = W / P = 49.637/7,000 =7.09 in 2

The projected area of the finished product must be within 7.09 in 2

2. Add a row of props on the center line. (Picture 6.2B)

M = 8.500 / 2 = 4.250 in

W = 4 x 8.79 x 12,000 / 4.250 = 99,275 lbs

A (half pallet) = W / P = 99,275 / 7,000 = 14.18 in 2

A (acceptable total area of cavity) = 2 x 14.18=28.36 in 2

The projected area of the finished product must be within 28.36 in 2

3. Add two rows of support heads (Figure 6.2C)

M = 8.500 / 3 = 2.833 in

W = 148,930 lbs

A (1/3 pallet) = W / P = 21.27 in 2

A (acceptable total area of cavity) = 3 x 21.27 = 63.81 in 2

The projected area of the finished product must be within 63.81 in 2
